The UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences Indigenous Trauma & Resilience Research Center (ITRRC) will host a Zoom-based research ethics (rEthics) training for research in Indigenous communities on Wednesday, Sept. 25.
At the session, Cynthia Pearson, Ph.D., will discuss application of the Belmont Report and the Common Rule in American Indian / Alaska Native (AI/AN) health research.
Dr. Pearson, is a professor at the School of Social Work and director of research at the Indigenous Wellness Research Institute (IWRI) at the University of Washington. Since 2004, Dr. Pearson has collaborated with AI/AN communities in designing and implementing community-based prevention interventions and in the development of tribally approved research polices such as data use agreements and research and publication guidelines. Her effort has contributed to over 50 community and university-led grants. As principal investigator, Dr. Pearson has produced several evidence-based therapeutic adapted curriculums with Native Americans. They include: cognitive processing therapy addressing PTSD and HIV risk; motivational interviewing with cognitive behavioral therapy (MIST) addressing substance misuse and HIV risk; narrative exposure therapy for PTSD symptoms; and a human subject training curriculum on the conduct of ethical research with AI/AN communities.
The presentation will be held at 11 a.m. via Zoom and will be followed by a 15 minute Q&A and lunch Memorial Union Room 103.
