This is the first of a two-part series to help researchers understand and navigate their way through the sometimes confusing and overwhelming contractual obligations of managing a grant. The goal is to help PIs and Co-PIs understand their obligations and introduce the tools and support that the UND Grants Office provides. Topics include: 1) award negotiation and acceptance; 2) post-award language basics; 3) award setup; 4) allowability of costs and various aspects of managing awards, including reviewing expenses monthly; and 5) dealing with accelerated or delayed expenditures and how to obtain prior approval requests.

Introduction by Dr. Scott Snyder | Vice President for Research & Economic Development Part 1 | Lauren Pite, Director of Grants & Contracts Accounting

This session will wrap up discussions from the Post-Award grants office with topics to include: 1) reporting obligations; 2) award closeout; 3) addressing any performance or fiscal audits; 4) meeting requirements for efforts and payroll, including summer salary.

Part 2 | Michael Sadler, Director of Research & Sponsored Program Development

This session will help provide insight into meeting compliance and ethics requirements related to grant activity. Topics will include 1) when and how to obtain IRB/IACUC/IBC approval; 2) managing and addressing conflict of interest; 3) export control; and 4) plagiarism.

Panel Discussions from Successful PIs

This session will host faculty with expertise on post-award to provide guidance and expertise to audience attendees. The focus will be on the technical (non-financial) aspects of managing your grants. Topics of discussion include: 1) establishing and managing a successful team; 2) providing tips on getting the work done that is aligned with the work scope and timeline proposed to the funding agency; 3) how to prevent surprises; 4) guidance on time management; 5) setting yourself up for the next award; and 6) working within the UND system.
