What is the Order of the Engineer?
Over 50 years old, the Order of the Engineer consists of engineers worldwide who pledge to uphold devotion to the standards and dignity of the engineering profession. Ceremonies are held across the United States at which qualified engineers are invited to accept the Obligation of the Engineer and a stainless steel ring.
The Order of the Engineer was initiated in the United States to foster a spirit of pride and responsibility in the engineering profession, to bridge the gap between training and experience, and to present to the public a visible symbol identifying the engineer. The Order is not a membership organization; there are never any meetings to attend or dues to pay. Instead, the Order fosters a unity of purpose and the lifelong honoring of one’s pledge.
What is the Pledge of the Computing Professional?
The Pledge of the Computing Professional is an organization to promote the notion of computing as a recognized profession at the time of graduation for students in Computer Science and related programs. The Pledge is modeled after the Order of the Engineer – a long-standing rite-of-passage for graduates from engineering programs. The Pledge of the Computing Professional is solely intended to promote and recognize the ethical and moral behavior of graduates of computing-related degree programs as they transition to careers of service to society.
The Pledge of the Computing Professional entails a rite-of-passage ceremony for graduates from computing programs. This rite-of-passage ceremony dovetails nicely with existing Order of the Engineer ceremonies for colleges that have both engineering and computing degree programs. The rite-of-passage ceremony is conducted by Nodes (chapters) at institutions throughout the USA. The Pledge of the Computing Professional has been endorsed by the Order of the Engineer, the ACM Special Interest Group on Computers and Society (ACM SIGCAS), and the ACM Committee on Professional Ethics (ACM COPE).
How to Register
To participate in the Order of the Engineer & Pledge of the Computing Professional Ceremony, you must register by May 8. Be on the lookout for a future email that will contain a registration link. This link will be sent out to all qualifying students in April. If you're participating in the Order of the Engineer Ceremony, you can plan ahead by determining the ring size of your fifth finger (i.e. pinky/little finger), as you'll have to provide this information at registration. You can talk to Kathie Johnke in the CEC Solberg Success Center, who can assist in determining your size.
