Nuremberg's Citizen Prosecutor: Gregory Gordon on Benjamin Ferencz and the Birth of International Law

Monday, February 9, 2026 12 pm to 1 pm

Professor Gregory Gordon will present his new biography of Benjamin B. Ferencz, one of the twentieth century’s most influential champions of international justice. At just 27 years old, Ferencz served as chief prosecutor in what was called “the biggest murder trial in history” at Nuremberg, holding Nazi Einsatzgruppen leaders accountable for the murder of more than 1.5 million people during the Holocaust. From investigating war crimes in the aftermath of World War II to helping lay the groundwork for the International Criminal Court decades later, Ferencz played a unique role in every phase of modern international criminal justice. Drawing on unprecedented access to Ferencz’s personal papers, Gordon—himself a former war crimes prosecutor—offers a gripping account of a life devoted to justice, accountability, and peace.
