Design, Assembly, Processing, and Chemistry of Coordination Materials
Coordination chemistry offers excellent opportunities for the rational design of functional materials. However, despite several notable examples of rationally-designed coordination-based solids having properties such as porosity and/or (semi)conductivity that are predicted a priori, the practicing chemist just as often encounters unexpected outcomes of self-assembly and chemical sensitivity that limit exploration of functional characteristics. In the Feldblyum group at SUNY Albany, we are studying the synthesis, stability, and functional behavior of several classes of coordination materials including metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), II-VI 2D wide bandgap semiconductors, and metallopolymers. We discuss in this presentation both the successes and challenges of these materials to achieve and maintain the functional properties that are pre-supposed from hypothetical models.
