Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Healthcare (virtual presentation)

Wednesday, April 17, 2024 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm

All UND community members (students, faculty, staff) are invited to attend the following timely virtual faculty development event hosted by the School of Medicine and Health Sciences', Teaching, Learning and Scholarship faculty development unit on April 17 at 12:30 p.m. (Central). The presentation will be streamed live on Zoom and recorded.

The potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to transform every aspect of our world is becoming increasingly evident. Healthcare may be one sector where AI has the potential to truly disrupt and revolutionize. As patient data sets become larger, manual analysis is becoming less feasible. AI has the power to efficiently process data far beyond our own capacity, reducing the burden on health care providers and freeing up more time for patient engagement. AI may also improve patient outcomes by analyzing patient records (natural language processing) and radiologic images (image processing) through deep learning networks.

But the promise of innovation does not come without risk, especially in healthcare. How much of what we hear is hype, how much is fear of change, and what are the real risks involved? Which AI applications can be trusted and how do we know?

In this presentation, Dr. Richard Van Eck, Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning and the Monson Endowed Chair of Medical Education will share insights from his recent studies through a six-week, MIT course on this topic. You will gain a basic overview of AI technology, including supervised machine learning, natural language processing, image processing, and deep learning/neural networks, and machine learning. You’ll also learn about the various ways each technology can be applied, and what their limitations are. In the process, Dr. Van Eck will share how AI strategies have already been used in the health care sector, drawing on real-world case studies and clinical trials in areas like chemotherapy, patient diagnosis and treatment, breast cancer, and mortality prediction. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, you’ll learn what the right questions to ask are when considering your specific application of AI to a healthcare problem.

This faculty development event is hosted by the Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship (TLAS) unit of Education Resources at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Our faculty development sessions showcase topics of interest to the medical and health education community and are all free and open to anyone. Previous sessions can be streamed at any time from our website. Again, anyone in the UND community (students, faculty, staff) are welcome to join this event. You do not need to be affiliated with the SMHS.

If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact Adrienne Salentiny (adrienne.salentiny@UND.edu).
