18:83 Speaker Series - Dr. Liz Legerski

This week’s speaker will be Dr. Liz Legerski! 

Dr. Liz Legerski is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of North Dakota. A first-generation college graduate, she earned her B.S. and M.S. in Sociology at Brigham Young University and her Ph.D. at the University of Kansas. She has been at UND since 2010, teaching courses such as social inequality, social movements, social policy, drugs and society, and statistics.

Her research interests include exploring gender issues, social inequalities, families, and social policy. She is particularly interested in the way employment opportunities and social policies shape the lives of women, working-class and marginalized families. Her most recent work has explored aspects of sexual harassment and interpersonal violence in the Bakken region of Western North Dakota, among student field placements, and among those employed in the restaurant service industry. Her work has been published in journals such as Social Forces, Gender & Society, Sex Roles, Journal of GLBT Family Studies, Health Sociology Review, the Journal of Interpersonal Violence, and the International Journal of Care and Caring.

As an advocate for shared governance in higher education, she has served on the NDUS Council of College Faculties (2017-2020), as Chair of the UND University Senate (2020-2021), and as the Faculty Advisor to the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education (2020-2022).

Liz was born and raised in the Twin Cities of Minnesota. She has two children, and her spouse, John-Paul Legerski, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at UND.
