Graduate Research Achievement Day (or GRAD, for short) is a celebration of our graduate students’ work over the past academic year. Students will present their work in a Poster format to be judged by faculty. Cash prizes will be awarded to those students whose work and presentation are deemed best. All graduate students, full time or part time, from all disciplines and all colleges are encouraged to participate. Virtual program is for online/distance students and the in person program is for on campus students.

All sessions are open to the public.

“Effects of Methamphetamine on Adrenal Cells”

Bio: Dr. Schmidt is a Professor of Chemistry and the Chair of the Division of Science at Minot State University. Dr. Schmidt earned a dual Ph.D. in both Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and Chemistry from Michigan State University in 2003. He served as a Research Officer at the University of New South Wales in Sydney Australia after earning his degree, followed by a post-doctoral appointment at Northwestern University in Chicago before joining the Minot State University faculty in 2008. Prior to starting at Minot State, Dr. Schmidt was awarded the Young Bioenergeticist Award by the Biophysical Society in 2003 and the University of New South Wales Dean of Medicine’s Postdoctoral Fellowship in 2006.

In his time at Minot State University, Dr. Schmidt has consistently maintained an active research group led by undergraduate research students. He has successfully obtained external grant funding (INBRE) in all but one year since. He has had collaborative projects with faculty in Biomedical Sciences at UND, at Mayville State University, and in Chemistry and Biochemistry at NDSU. He has successfully trained dozens of students in biochemical research, with numerous having gone on to obtain their Ph.D. after completing their undergraduate degree at Minot State. In the Spring of 2023, he was awarded the Minot State University Board of Reagents Award for Scholarship in recognition of his continuous research activity with undergraduate students.

Abstract: Amphetamines are known to induce release of norepinephrine, epinephrine, and dopamine in the brain. Classic methamphetamine (MA) aversive effects are similar to epinephrine responses, suggesting possible epinephrine secretion in the peripheral nervous system via adrenal chromaffin cells as the cause of these aversive effects. Chromaffin cells originate from the neural crest and thus it is conceivable that they may react to MA in a manner similar to the mechanisms in the brain. The overall aim of the work presented is the study of catecholamine release from adrenal chromaffin cells upon MA-stimulation. Initial studies have consistently indicated epinephrine release from chromaffin cells in response to MA treatment. Recent work has focused on the mechanism of epinephrine release in response to MA. Understanding the role that chromaffin cells have in eliciting the aversive side effects of methamphetamine use have a crucial role in understanding MA addiction and providing a potential avenue for effective treatment. Further, lack of catecholamine secretion is known to be associated with various diseases, including Parkinson’s disease. Providing the detailed mechanisms involved in peripheral catecholamine secretion could increase the potential for autologous transplants for patients with Parkinson’s disease.

Alison is a UND Ph.D. Student in Counseling Psychology. This year she is completing her Master’s internship at the UND Counseling Center. She aims to help students learn more about themselves, how to manage stress, and develop healthy relationships with themselves and others. This year she will be hosting weekly ‘Let's Talk’ hours at Wilkerson Dining Hall in office 109 on Tuesdays from 12-4. During this time, you may stop by to chat, learn more about the UND University Counseling Center where you can receive confidential counseling services at no additional cost, and learn about resources available to UND students.

Following the fireside chat, participants are invited to join a walking tour of the U.S. Capitol, offering a closer look at the history, architecture, and institutions at the heart of American democracy. The tour will be escorted from HVC-201 and end at SR-385 for social.

From 12–1:15 p.m., the event features a keynote presentation by Chris Ruden, an amputee, Type 1 diabetic, record-holding powerlifter, keynote speaker, and disabled model featured on The Rock’s hit television show "Titan Games." After experiencing stigma, mental health challenges, and barriers associated with disability, Chris transformed these obstacles into opportunities. Through his bionic arm, diabetes technology, and the message of “creating your world without limits,” he shares powerful insights on resilience, identity, and redefining possibility.

The afternoon continues from 1:30–3:30 p.m. with community partners and campus organizations, providing opportunities to learn about resources, services, and initiatives that support access, equity, and participation across the UND community and beyond.

Eco-social work is a way of engaging, assessing, and intervening that centers the interdependence of all of life. This session will explore eco-social work tenets and review ways to incorporate the approach into micro, mezzo, and macro-level practices that foster collective healing.

Most institutions are testing AI solutions, but few have a roadmap that connects experimentation to institutional strategy and impact. This session outlines a pragmatic framework for developing a cohesive, institution-wide AI strategy, starting with shared vision and guiding principles, mapping opportunities and readiness, and translating them into a realistic roadmap for action.

Afia Tasneem will share how universities are designing their institution-wide AI strategy and roadmap that balances agility with accountability. Participants will leave with practical tips for assessing institutional readiness, identifying high-impact use cases, and developing a campus culture that promotes sustainable, equitable AI adoption.

Afia Tasneem is a nationally recognized AI strategist and higher education transformation leader. As Senior Director and AI Strategy Lead in Huron’s Education Consulting practice, she helps higher education leaders advance AI initiatives from isolated experiments into institution-wide capabilities, aligning innovation with mission, operational priorities, and responsible use.

Prior to Huron, Afia led IT and AI Strategy Advisory Services at EAB where she conceived and launched an AI Strategy Product Suite, equipping leaders at 300+ institutions with AI strategy, governance, enablement, and application practices needed to scale AI from early pilots to institution-wide adoption.

A sought-after speaker, she has delivered AI plenary sessions to audiences of 200+ university presidents and led immersive workshops with 100+ CIOs, sparking collaboration and shared learning across national and international peer networks.

Participants will engage in guided roundtable conversations with peers, exploring topics such as safety and consent, alcohol use and harm reduction, and cannabis and hallucinogen awareness. Discussions are centered on real-life scenarios, shared experiences, and practical strategies for reducing harm and supporting one another in social and campus settings. Participation is encouraged but never required, and all conversations are grounded in respect, curiosity, and personal perspective.

More on this Session: This session invites social workers to move towards a community-centered praxis rooted in 2SLGBTQIA+ lived experiences, mutual aid, and collective resilience. Drawing from queer and trans frameworks and community care traditions, participants will explore how to ground their practice as one that resists harm, honors survival, and nurtures belonging.

Participants will:

Identify ways structures such as social networks, policies, historical events, and systems impact 2SLGBTQIA+ lives Develop an understanding of how to engage in mutual aid, trust building, and the importance of centering community needs that focus on mental health Explore affirmative and anti-oppressive practices that validate identity and identity experiences, challenge stigma, and move past neutrality Anyone can attend! This semester, Alison Rollag (She/her), can help you determine whether or not formal counseling at the UCC would be useful for you, and if appropriate can help assist you in scheduling an appointment. Alison is a UND Ph.D. Student in Counseling Psychology. This year she is completing her Master’s internship at the UND Counseling Center. She aims to help students learn more about themselves, how to manage stress, and develop healthy relationships with themselves and others. This year she will be hosting weekly ‘Let's Talk’ hours at Wilkerson Dining Hall in office 109 on Tuesdays from 12-4. During this time, you may stop by to chat, learn more about the UND University Counseling Center where you can receive confidential counseling services at no additional cost, and learn about resources available to UND students.

From May 2023:

Ryan Zerr, a longtime professor, department chair and associate dean at UND and former University Senate chair, has been appointed to the position of associate vice president for Strategy & Implementation at the University.

In this position, Zerr will serve as the chief administrator charged with implementing, tracking and reporting on UND LEADS, the University’s new strategic plan. He also will help lead and support other institutional efforts to integrate strategic planning across the institution.

The appointment was made by UND President Andrew Armacost.

In addition to his leadership role with the Strategic Plan, Zerr also will work with UND’s director of Institutional Effectiveness to maintain the University’s strong standing with the Higher Learning Commission — the institutional accreditor for colleges and universities in the central United States — and related accrediting bodies.

Zerr is a professor of mathematics at UND, where he has served as a faculty member for the past 20 years. His experience in university shared governance stretches from the departmental to the institutional level. Besides serving as the chair of the UND University Senate, he has chaired or co-chaired multiple university-wide committees and working groups.

His present shared governance work includes membership on the University Senate, and he is a member of the institutional reaccreditation executive committee.

Zerr also served as an associate dean in the UND College of Arts & Sciences. He previously has served as the director of Essential Studies and as associate chair within the Department of Mathematics.

Zerr earned his doctorate in Mathematics from Iowa State University. He also holds a master’s degree in Mathematics and a bachelor’s degree in Meteorological Studies from UND.

The training focuses on helping participants identify common signs of mental health challenges, stress, and crisis, including indicators of depression, anxiety, and potential suicide risk. Participants learn how to approach and engage individuals with care and empathy, initiate supportive conversations, and respond in ways that reduce stigma and promote help-seeking behavior.

Upon completion of the training, participants are encouraged to display a Green Tag in their workspace, or on their door frame.This visible marker signals to students and colleagues that the individual is a trained, approachable resource who can offer support and guidance toward help.

Tess Moeller has a diverse work experience in the healthcare industry, starting with their role as a Registered Nurse at Avera St. Luke's Hospital from 2012 to 2014. Tess then moved on to Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center, where they served as a Registered Nurse from 2014 to 2015.

In 2015, Tess joined Avera Health as a Leadership & Organizational Development Consultant, a role they held until 2018. During their time at Avera, they worked on developing leadership capabilities and improving organizational performance.

From 2018 to 2019, Tess held various positions at Avera St. Mary's Hospital, including the role of Interim Chief Nursing Officer. In 2019, they transitioned to Avera St. Luke's Hospital and took on the role of Director of Quality, Strategy, and Innovation. Tess later became the Quality, Strategy, and Innovation Officer before being promoted to Vice President Operations in 2021. Tess served in this role until 2022.

Most recently, Tess joined the City of Grand Forks ND in 2023 as the Public Health Director.

Tess Moeller completed their Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Registered Nursing/Registered Nurse from Augustana University (SD) between 2007 and 2012. Later on, from 2014 to 2016, they pursued their Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree in Healthcare Administration from the University of Sioux Falls.

“Watching Electrons Dance: From Time-Dependent Quantum Theory to Spectroscopy”

Bio: Dr. Xiaosong Li is the Larry R. Dalton Endowed Chair in Chemistry and Senior Associate Dean for Research in the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Washington. He earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Wayne State University in 2003, followed by postdoctoral research at Yale University before joining the University of Washington in 2005. In addition to his faculty appointments in the Departments of Chemistry and Materials Science & Engineering, he is a Lab Fellow at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.

An internationally recognized leader in time-dependent quantum theory and relativistic electronic structure methods, Dr. Li's research spans physics, chemistry, materials science, mathematics, and computer science. He has authored over 300 peer-reviewed publications and developed widely used computational software.

Dr. Li's contributions have been recognized with numerous honors, including a Sloan Research Fellowship, the NSF CAREER Award, the ACS Jack Simons Award in Theoretical Physical Chemistry, and the University of Washington Distinguished Teaching Award. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the American Physical Society (APS), and the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), and an elected member of the Washington State Academy of Sciences.

Abstract: Many important chemical and physical processes happen on extremely short timescales. These ultrafast electron motions play a central role in technologies such as solar energy conversion, photocatalysis, radiation chemistry, and advanced spectroscopy. To understand and eventually control these processes, scientists must be able to describe how electrons move and interact with one another, with atomic nuclei, and with external influences such as light, magnetic fields, and radiation.

Research in the Li group aims to develop new theoretical models and computer simulations that make it possible to study these rapid, complex electronic motions in realistic chemical systems. These methods are designed to work across a wide range of conditions, from everyday chemical environments to extreme regimes where relativistic effects become important.

In this talk, I will highlight recent progress in our group’s development of time-dependent electronic structure theories and advanced simulation tools. I will also present applications of these methods to important chemical phenomena, including how molecules absorb X-rays, how protons move after electronic excitation, and how materials respond to magnetic and optical fields. Together, these advances help deepen our understanding of ultrafast chemistry and support the design of next-generation energy and spectroscopy technologies.

The season of chamber music by nationally and internally known musicians is the only series of its kind in the Grand Forks area. Chamber music can include both vocal and instrumental music played by a small ensemble with only one player to a part. Although it is often associated with string quartets, nearly any instrument and music from any musical period including modern and contemporary, can be found on a chamber music concert program. The Museum has excellent acoustics for this kind of intimate performance, and concerts are always followed by a free wine and cheese reception where audience members have a chance to meet the visiting musicians.

All concerts are held on Sunday afternoons at 2 pm in the Museum galleries. They are open to everyone in the community and throughout the region. Tickets range from $10 to $35. Discounted season tickets are also available. Museum members receive discounted tickets and children 12 and under are free, as are students from 12-18 who play in their school orchestra or band. Seating is limited and guests are encouraged to buy their tickets in advance and come early for the best seats. Reservations may be made through the museum’s website at ndmoa.com or by calling 701-777-4195. Season tickets are also available.

Laura J. Link, Ed.D., is an Associate Professor of Teaching & Leadership and Director of the Master of Science in Teaching & Leadership and Mastery Learning Graduate Certificate programs at the University of North Dakota. She holds a doctorate in Leadership & Policy Studies from the University of Memphis, and her research focuses on developing and supporting highly effective leaders and organizational cultures that prioritize effective grading practices, collaboration, and meaningful classroom assessment. She is the co-author of Cornerstones of Strong Schools: Practices for Purposeful Leadership (with J. Zoul, 2007), and author of Leadership in Grading Reform in What We Know About Grading (Guskey, T. R., & Brookhart, S. M., Eds., 2019) as well as multiple book chapters and articles such as The Problem with Traditional Grading Systems (2025), Navigating the Legal Terrain of Grading Disputes (2024), Is Standards-Based Grading Effective? (2022), Are Your Grading Policies Legally Sound? (2021), How Traditional Grading Contributes to Student Inequalities and How to Fix It (2019), and Teachers’ Perceptions of Grading Practices: How Pre-service Training Makes a Difference (2018). Dr. Link also leads K-12 assessment and grading academies and has led an array of other professional development efforts, classes, and initiatives over her career. Since 2002, Dr. Link has presented locally and nationally on the topics of high-impact leadership, K-12 grading, mastery learning, research-practice partnerships, teacher support, and more. Before joining UND, Dr. Link served as Associate Dean of the College of Public Service at the University of Houston-Downtown in Texas. At UHD, she created the university’s first-ever Educational Leadership graduate programs, including a Foundations of Educational Leadership Certificate that is the only one of its kind in the state of Texas, and she facilitated an array of K-12 district partnerships. She also created the UHD’s first Urban Education Advisory Board, which involves superintendents and executive leaders from across the greater Houston region. Additionally, Dr. Link was an Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership at Purdue University Fort Wayne in Indiana. At PFW, she was an active member of the CAEP Assessment Steering Committee, led various local K-12 assessment and grading academies, co-facilitated PFW’s University Leadership Academy, and directed the Professors in Partnership K-16 collaborative.

Prior to her higher education experience, Dr. Link served as Chief Academic Officer at Jackson-Madison County Schools in Jackson, TN, and was Assistant Superintendent of Teaching & Learning as well as Chief of Talent Management in Shelby County Schools in Memphis, TN. She was 1 of 7 Transition Steering Committee members charged with leading the largest school district merger in United States’ history. Additionally, Dr. Link has served in an array of central office and school-based administrative roles (in both urban and suburban settings) and has taught elementary, middle, high school and college students over her 34 years in public and private education. Dr. Link also served a long-standing state Board Member of Learning Forward Tennessee and President of Learning Forward Indiana, a professional association devoted exclusively to those who work in K-16 professional development.

All the musicians have built their musical instruments after researching their histories, based, in many cases, on models recovered from archaeological sites. The repertoire includes both traditional folk music and new compositions designed to explore sounds that come from combining technologies of the past and the present.

The season of chamber music by nationally and internally known musicians is the only series of its kind in the Grand Forks area. Chamber music can include both vocal and instrumental music played by a small ensemble with only one player to a part. Although it is often associated with string quartets, nearly any instrument and music from any musical period including modern and contemporary, can be found on a chamber music concert program. The Museum has excellent acoustics for this kind of intimate performance, and concerts are always followed by a free wine and cheese reception where audience members have a chance to meet the visiting musicians.

All concerts are held on Sunday afternoons at 2 pm in the Museum galleries. They are open to everyone in the community and throughout the region. Tickets range from $10 to $35. Discounted season tickets are also available. Museum members receive discounted tickets and children 12 and under are free, as are students from 12-18 who play in their school orchestra or band. Seating is limited and guests are encouraged to buy their tickets in advance and come early for the best seats. Reservations may be made through the museum’s website at ndmoa.com or by calling 701-777-4195. Season tickets are also available.

Free parking is available adjacent to the museum; the museum is ADA accessible.

Kristi Hall-Jiran brings nearly 30 years of community leadership and partnership experience to Altru, including serving as CEO/President of Community Violence Intervention Center (CVIC) for over two decades. Hall-Jiran is a master’s level licensed professional clinical counselor with additional certifications in nonprofit leadership and management.

She currently serves on the board of directors of the Empire Arts Center and National Domestic Violence Hotline, as well as the UND Nistler College of Business and Public Administration and Greater Grand Forks Young Professionals Advisory Councils. She has previously served in many leadership positions including as chair of The Chamber Board of Directors, founding member of Women’s Fund of the Community Foundation, Bush Foundation ND Advisory Council, and Sharon Lutheran Church Council Chair.

About ArtSee
Since the first ArtSee event in 2006, we have brought together hundreds of artists from the greater Grand Forks area to the North Dakota Museum of Art. From painting to word carving, ArtSee is the event of the year for all mediums. ArtSee’s purpose is to create a space for artists to connect with the community and to highlight the creative talent that we have right here in the Greater Grand Forks Region. ArtSee is GGFYP’s way of providing support for the Greater Grand Forks art community.

Our artists
All our artists are encouraged to sell their pieces. GGFYP provides all artists with a payment for their time at the ArtSee and any donated art for the raffle.

You can support ArtSee by purchasing art raffle tickets at the event or a pay-what-you-can ticket online. All proceeds go towards ArtSee expenses, which include paying our featured artists, catering, and other event-related expenses. Happy Harry’s kindly sponsors all the free alcoholic drinks provided during the event.

Join us welcoming the Orchestra of Indigenous Instruments and New Technology (OIANT) Musical Group from Argentina to play at our concert in May! The GGFSO will feature many Argentinian works including Fernando Altube’s symphony “Pitete Ueru” which will introduce the listener to the beauty and intensity of the songs of the original peoples of Argentina. For a unique and a once in a lifetime experience the spring concert will surely be the place to go.

Adding a class as an audit: changing from grade to audit; and changing from audit to grade.

Auditors have no claim on the time or service of the instructor. Normally, auditors will be expected to attend, but not required to participate in the oral or written work of the class. If they are allowed to take examinations, the exams would normally not be graded. It is up to the instructor, however, to determine the appropriate requirements or restrictions for auditors for any given course. If students fulfill the expected requirements, their transcript will show no credit for the class, but a designation of “AU.” If they do not meet expectations, a grade of “WAU” will be entered on their transcript. Auditors are identified to the instructor on the official class list. An auditor may not later establish credit in that course by taking a special examination. The course must be repeated to earn credit. Audited courses do not count toward class load for financial aid or other purposes.

Participants will learn how to file an LLC directly through the Secretary of State, obtain a free EIN from the IRS, and open a business bank account without paying “formation specialists.” The session also introduces the robust network of no-cost business support available to small business owners nationwide, including VBOC, SBDC, Women’s Business Centers, APEX Accelerators, and local economic development partners, ensuring entrepreneurs have trusted guidance every step of the way.
