Detour to Café: If you’re attending a weekday lecture stop by the Museum Café for lunch or beverages. Lunch served 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Happy Hour is 3–5 p.m.

"Material Abstractions" includes the work of 24 artists. The history of abstraction has typically focused on a sequential progression of heroic individuals in Western art “discovering” abstract art in the early 20th century. By contrast, Material Abstractions acknowledges the global and diverse traditions of abstract art, many of which predate Western developments. On display through Oct. 4, 2026.

Anna Sigridur Arnar, Ph.D., Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art
Arnar was raised in Minneapolis, Minn., and Reykjavík, Iceland. She received a bachelor’s in French literature and art history from St. Olaf College, followed by a year studying at the department of textiles at the Iceland Academy of Arts. She earned her master’s and Ph.D. with honors in art history from the University of Chicago. At Minnesota State University Moorhead, she was Professor of Art History in the School of Art where she oversaw the Certificate in Museum and Cultural Heritage Professions. She also served as an affiliated faculty in the Women and Gender Studies Program.
